Practice philosophy

Therapy will be a collaborative experience. I respect that you are the expert about your life. I will validate your experiences while helping you make sense of your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. I have experience working with clients from many demographic and cultural backgrounds, and I will strive to understand and honor the unique ways in which your identities influence how you experience the world.

My overarching practice philosophy is shaped by one of the primary goals of Dialectical Behavior Therapy: achieving balance between acceptance and change. This may mean working to understand and validate your emotional experiences while simultaneously changing thoughts and behaviors that are not serving you. My goal is to create space for you to be vulnerable and authentic through a warm and empathic style. I strive to empower you to take control of your symptoms, foster self-compassion, and grow in ways that are important to you. In our work together, you may face feared situations, learn how to identify, challenge and create distance from unhelpful thoughts, cultivate acceptance, clarify life values, increase time spent on meaningful activities, and practice mindfulness, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness skills.

  • I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to determine if I can provide treatment that meets your needs. During this call, I will answer your questions and describe the logistics of working together.

  • If you decide to pursue treatment, we will spend the first few sessions discussing your background and symptoms. We will also identify your goals for treatment and develop a treatment plan.

For some clients, I may suggest a specific evidence-based treatment protocol. For other clients, I will suggest we draw upon skills and techniques from different therapies to address your symptoms. I will be transparent with you about why I am suggesting a particular approach. With either, I am committed to only using practices that are well-supported by research while flexibly adapting to your unique circumstances, background, and goals for therapy.

  • Therapy sessions are typically 50 minutes and occur weekly. Some treatments may be more effective in longer sessions; we will discuss if this approach might make sense for you. We may also decide to meet less frequently as you near the end of treatment, typically 1-2 times per month. To ensure that we are meeting your therapy goals, I may ask you to complete brief questionnaires via the secure Client Portal as you progress through treatment .

All sessions take place virtually via a HIPAA-compliant video platform. I am able to see clients residing anywhere in California, where I am licensed.
